Laura Slaughter received her PhD in 2002 in Information Science from the University of Maryland. This was followed by postdoctoral training at the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia University, New York. Her main focus is in the area of healthcare and biomedical informatics. She has worked on a wide variety of healthcare projects covering various types of healthcare systems, including patient-oriented personal health records (PHRs) and clinical decision support. In general, she is interested in healthcare standards, biomedical ontologies and terminologies and use of semantic web technologies within the health area. Her current research centres on querying and exploring large integrated healthcare datasets, and the reuse, development and evaluation of biomedical ontologies.
