Optique Summit in Oxford 15th September 2016

SIRIUS is contributing to and participating in the Optique Project Summit on 15th September, hosted by the The University of Oxford. The summit will review the EU Project Optique’s claim to bring about a paradigm shift for data access, by providing a semantic end-to-end connection between users and data sources. The approach enable users to rapidly formulate intuitive queries using familiar vocabularies and conceptualizations seamlessly integrating data spread across multiple distributed data sources, including streaming sources exploiting massive parallelism for scalability far beyond traditional RDBMSs and thus reducing the turnaround time for information requests to minutes rather than days. SPE Intelligent Energy Conference 2016

SIRIUS will be participating at the SPE Intelligent Energy Conference in Aberdeen 6th-8th September 2016. A paper will be presented on the use of the products from the Optique project to improve the effectiveness of data access in Statoil’s exploration department. The paper, entitled ‘Optique: Simple, Oil & Gas-oriented Access to Big Data in Exploration’ is scheduled for presentation in technical session 8, Big Data Analytics and Applications, which will start at 1:45 pm on Wednesday 7 September in the Crombie A room. The Optique presentation will begin at 3:15 pm.

European Data Forum

The European Data Forum was held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, at the end of June 2016. SIRIUS was represented at the conference and the Optique project was a gold sponsor. The theme of the conference was “Scaling up the European Data Economy”.

The following observations can be made:

Data science is taken very seriously by universities in The Netherlands. Eindhoven and Amsterdam, for example have set up large and popular programmes with a basis in law, engineering and statistics. Linkages to large companies and start-ups are close and there is a critical mass of data science skills in Brabant.
Companies like Philips and Siemens are changing their business models to participate in the “data economy”. They are engaged in thinking about using IT at a high level, CEO rather than CIO. The CEO of Philips held the keynote of the conference.
