SIRIUS is working together with Bosch to deliver an infrastructure for scaling industrial artificial intelligence. The SIndAIS4 project brings Bosch and SIRIUS researchers together with a wide group of international experts in this area. We are also looking at bringing results from the manufacturing sector into the oil and gas area.

Industrial Ontologies Workshops, Oslo, 4th-7th February 2019

On February 4th – 7th 2019, SIRIUS will, together with DNV GL and Industrial Ontology Foundry (https://sites.google.com/view/industrialontologies/home), host the Industrial Ontologies Workshops. The website of the event including registration is found at:

The main goal is to facilitate information exchange and collaboration between people and projects. And as you will see, we are gathering thought leaders from both academia and industry to present and discuss technology, implementation and standardization of ontologies. Oil and Gas will be well represented as will manufacturing and IoT.

The event is open to all with some knowledge of ontologies and use of these, and with an interest in what is happening within this interesting field. The SIRIUS Centre will be represented by both its employees and those of participating companies.

SIRIUS Innovation Forum Launched at Cutting Edge Festival

The SIRIUS Innovation Forum was launched at the Cutting Edge Festival in Oslo on 26th September 2017. SIRIUS organised a workshop as part of the conference with the theme “Renewing Norwegian Industry”. Keynote presentations were given by Åshild Larsen, CIO of Statoil and Hans Kristian Danielsen, Vice President in DNV-GL oil and gas. The session was attended by an interested group of SMEs and industrial representatives, which was encouraging, given how many other events were on at the same time at Cutting Edge. David Cameron from SIRIUS, talked about the purpose of the Innovation Forum and Arild Waaler, SIRIUS’ director presented a project where knowledge representation has the potential to radically improve how large industrial projects are performed.

SIRIUS Researchers at Conference of Science and Technology Studies (4S) in Boston

From August 30th to September 2nd, Elena Parmiggiani from the Sirius team at NTNU will be attending the Annual Conference of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), in Boston, Mass, USA.

The conference is the most important international event for researchers in the field of Science and Technology Studies, one of the fields of expertise of the Sirius team at NTNU. This field focuses on the way social and technical aspects always mutually influence each other.

Elena will present her ongoing work with Eric Monteiro and Thomas Østerlie titled “Synthetic situations and algorithmic phenomena”, aimed at better understanding the evolution of work practices in the oil and gas industry in increasing digital settings (described theoretically as “synthetic situations”).

The presentation will focus on three case studies followed by the NTNU team, namely the surveillance of the drilling activity, the modelling of oil and gas reservoirs, and subsea environmental monitoring. Among other aspects, the presentation will focus on the role of noise in large datasets as productive source of information over time, that might turn out to have business value.

The presentation is part of a session which problematizes the active role of software and machines in different aspects of work and life, including genetics, healthcare, and the use of bots in social networks.
