David Cameron, Coordinator of the SIIRUS centre, held a keynote presentation at SINTEF’s annual Petroleum Conference in Trondheim, The presentation described SIRIUS’ plans and progress, highlighting our new research programs and beacons. Special mention was given to the Geological Assistant, Digital Field Development and Digital Twins beacons. The presentation also described present and potential collaborations with SINTEF, such as the GEMINI Big Data Centre and the Big Data Value Association.

The conference was very interesting and rich in content. It started with an informative and enlightening mini-course on digitalization concepts by workers from SINTEF DIgital. Presenters at the main conference included Tina Todnem from Equinor and Walter Qvam from DigitalNorway. The afternoon session on open data access was especially interesting, with a description by Equinor of their Volve data set, the Mongstad Technology Centre of their data sharing, Cognite of their work on liberation of operational data and SINTEF on models for open software development.

You can download the SIRIUS presentation here.

SIRIUS researchers Thomas Østerlie and Elena Parmiggiani from NTNU are chairing a session at this year’s European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2017) held in Guimaraez, Portugal this week. The track, ’The Internet of Things in Organizational Life’, links tightly with their on-going research within the SIRIUS technical strand on ‘Work practices’. ECIS is the premier European conference on topics related to ICTs and organization. Elena has also presented a paper at a pre-ECIS conference (IFIP WG 8.6) written along with colleagues from London School of Economis. Albeit based on research on digital drug delivery, this work provides a cross-domain understanding of the mutual influence of political issues and technological implementation in digital innovation, and how ‘big’ data influence knowledge-based policies at the national and international level; highly relevant issues for SIRIUS, too.

Making the Cloud work for Oil and Gas. How can research drive innovation?

The Cloud is changing the way companies access their applications, process their data and manage their infrastructure. What are the implications of this for the oil and gas supply chain. How can current and future research and development ensure that the Cloud improves the quality and availability of data for decision-making in oil and gas.

The SIRIUS Centre is holding a workshop on the Cloud in oil and gas in Oslo on Friday 18th November 2016. At this seminar we will gain an insight into how operating companies and key vendors are viewing the cloud and we will discuss together where research should be focussed. You will also get an opportunity to be updated on important European research projects on cloud computing: Envisage, HyVar, PaaSage and Melodic.

Where: Clarion Royal Christiania Hotel, Biskop Gunnerus’ gate, Oslo

When: Friday 18th November.

Cost: The workshop is free. We will invoice no-shows  NOK 500 to cover the cost of refreshments. Registrations from non-partners in SIRIUS will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Register using this link: https://nettskjema.uio.no/answer/sirius-cloud-2016.html by Monday 14th November.

The European Commission hosted an information day in Brussels on 14th October. This session covered four Public-Private Partnerships:

  • Factories of the Future (EFFRA)
  • Energy-efficient buildings
  • Sustainable Process Industry (SPIRE)
  • European Green Vehicles Initiative

David Cameron represented SIRIUS at the meeting, with the aim of establishing contact with the participants in the relevant PPPs and investigating how the ICT can be used as an enabling The technology for innovation in these areas. The presentations at the meeting made it clear that the EU sees a need for coordinating their ICT programs and, especially, the Factories of the Future research programs.  A speech to this effect was made by Khalil Rouhana, Director for Digital Industry in DG-CNECT. This is being done in 2016 through two Horizon 202o calls:

During the networking session in the afternoon there were a number of ICT research organizations that sought partners with maintenance problems that could be addressed. The SPIRE program, for the process industries, did not appear to have any relevant calls for application of ICT.

SIRIUS strongly support the linkage of the EU´s ICT programs and their cross-cutting programs. Digitalization means that the ICT research sector must deliver value by solving problems in Europe´s factories, chemical plants and mines. By doing this they can establish a powerful and productive ICT and analytics industry. However, it is the businesses that own the problems that ICT can solve. This requires a shared digital vision between the cross-cutting PPPs above and the Big Data Value Association. SIRIUS is a Full Member of BDVA and will work to build up this linkage between industry and ICT.
