Wednesday December 1st 2021, 2pm-3pm Oslo Time

This is first of a series of seminars on digital twins organized by the SIRIUS Centre for Research-Driven Innovation, the PeTWIN NFR research project and the dScience centre of the University of Oslo. The first of these seminars will be given by Janne Aas-Jakobsen, CEO of Consigli AS.

The seminar will be held virtually. Please register here to be sent a link for joining the seminar. https://nettskjema.no/a/234184

The digital twin for the building and construction industry has a very strong 3D-flavour and has been driven towards the ultimate visualization rather than a rich information model to support decision making. Consigli is developing a data-driven platform, aiming to design buildings by ML, Mathematics and coded domain knowledge – a self-designing engineer as a service. With hands on experience of the gap between the digital twin (BIM) and AI in the building and construction sector, Janne, the founder of Consigli, will present the ongoing research and development, challenges and opportunities related to their work.

What are the implications of data science for maintenance?

Can I safely share my industrial data with academics?

The SIRIUS Centre at the University of Oslo and Energy Valley invite you to a breakfast seminar on the digitalisation of engineering and heavy industry. Our guest lecturer, Professor Melinda Hodkiewicz from the University of Western Australia will be giving two presentations.

Time: 08:30-11:00, Monday 24th June 2019

Place: Smalltalk Lecture Theatre, Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, Gaustadalléen 23B, Oslo.

Please register by Thursday 20th June at https://nettskjema.uio.no/a/siriusenergyvalley

Transforming Maintenance through Data Science

Effective maintenance of engineering assets underpins the NOK 1,238 billion/year of export earnings from Australia’s resources sector. Significant corporate strategic focus and government funding is being directed at Industrie 4.0 projects but there is a massive disconnect between the 4.0 vision and today’s business practices. Historical practice for maintenance data collection, processing and use is not a solid foundation for the future. Maintenance management practices have also changed little in the last 20 years and are ripe for a digital overhaul that will bring developments in computational methods, statistics, applied mathematics and artificial intelligence to determine how, when and why maintenance is conducted. Collaboration with industry is key to this transformation. This talk describes how this challenge is being tackled by a new industry and government $8.8M co-funded Australian research group. Our goals are to enable development and adoption of new practices to improve productivity and asset reliability for industry and to foster a new maintenance technology service sector for national and international markets.

Data Risk Assessment Tool for industry-academic collaborations

For research in the fields of engineering asset management and system health, relevant data resides in the corporate systems of asset owners, typically corporations or government bodies. The process for obtaining a required dataset from these asset owners can be challenging. When data is provided to the researcher, unilateral restrictions on subsequent publication of results and/or data are often imposed, irrespective of risk. To facilitate a more consistent approach towards releasing data, the authors have developed a Data Risk Assessment Tool (DRAT) for evaluating the risk posed by providing datasets to academic entities for research purposes. This presentation describes the issues considered when developing the tool, describes the DRAT process and suggests exemplar management controls that data owners and researchers can implement based on each level of aggregated risk. The process has been reviewed and approved for use by research legal advisors of two global organisations, tested by an industry collaborator and post-hoc tested on industry-funded research projects.

Professor Melinda Hodkiewicz is an engineering academic working on multi-disciplinary projects to improve maintenance, asset management and safety practices. She has a 5 year A$1.3M Fellowship at the University of Western Australia funded by BHP, a major resources company and is a Visiting Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in the UK. She is actively involved in the development of ontology and natural language processing of maintenance and safety unstructured records which in turn assists the maintainer of the future. She is on the leadership team for the new ARC funded $8.8M Centre for Transforming Maintenance through Data Science, co-leads the data science program for the $10M ARC Offshore Structures Hub, and established the UWA System Health Lab. She has a number of external roles including Board member of Australia’s National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) and Advisory Board member for the Australian Government’s METS Ignited. She was the Australian representative on the original ISO 55001 Asset Management committee. In 2016 she was awarded the MESA Medal for services to the AM community.

SIRIUS, on behalf of the University of Oslo, has joined the Open Group’s Open Subsurface Data Universe forum. This consortium of oil companies, vendors and academics has the aim of building an open, standard data platform – initially for the oil and gas industry – that will bring together exploration, development, and wells data.

Equinor is a founding member of the forum. We also see that the mandate of the forum fits perfectly with SIRIUS’ mandate: opening up and providing scalable data access to subsurface data. Our ambition is to bring the experience from the Optique project and our Subsurface Data Access & Analytics beacon projects into the forum and use forum results in building our laboratories and demonstrators,

You can read more about the OSDU forum from the following press release. For more information about our participation, contact Adnan Latif or David Cameron.

SIRIUS is organising a workshop at the Cutting Edge festival on Tuesday 26th September 2017. The theme is “Renewing Norwegian Industry”.

The workshop is open to all conference participants at Cutting Edge. Register here: http://cuttingedgefestival.no/tickets/.

Theme and background

The oil price shock in 2014 has radically changed the outlook and challenges for Norwegian industry. We should change the way we work so that the existing oil and gas clusters can maintain skills and competitiveness. We also need to transfer the world-class skills and tools in the oil and gas sector to build new businesses in healthcare, environmental technology and high-technology. This workshop will explore how digitalization and transformed work practices can bring about these changes.

We will present perspectives on how digitalization can be made to work in industrial contexts and have an open discussion on how large industrial firms, SMEs and academics can work together to ensure that digitalization delivers what it promises.

This workshop will also include the launch of the SIRIUS Innovation Forum. This forum aims to provide a meeting place for researchers and practitioners of digital industry. It is run by the SIRIUS Centre for Scalable Data Access in the Oil and Gas Domain.

Program:

11.00-11.15 Getting the Dinosaurs to Dance: Innovation culture meets academia and the oil and gas industry. David Cameron, Centre Coordinator, SIRIUS Centre, University of Oslo.

11.15-11.30 Digitalization and Innovation in Statoil. Åshild Hanne Larsen, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Statoil ASA.

11:30-11:45 Why is that Computer Sitting in the Corner of the Control Room? Why Digitalization of Industry is Hard Work. Thomas Østerlie, NTNU

11:45-12:00 Perspectives from the Smart City: How do we cross-fertilize with industry? Elyette Roux, Vice President, Schneider Electric Norway

12:00-12:15 The Role of Platforms, DNV-GL (To be confirmed).

12:15-12:30 Engineering Requirements: An Example of Research-Enabled Digitalization, Arild Waaler, Director, SIRIUS Centre, University of Oslo.

12:30-13:00 Open forum. How do we rework innovation culture to get large industrial firms, SMEs and academics to work effectively together?
